As the world continues to evolve, people’s perceptions of sex and gender have varied, and they now have the liberty to choose whatever preference or identity they wish. Let it be as long as it gives them comfort. Whereas, in nature, these things were thought wrong. Because, contrary to popular belief, our Creator made only two types of sexuality: male and female. People, on the other hand, go beyond their limits because of their desires or personal interests, and adopt a preference that has been gained by society. Because others are doing it, some people believe it is good and acceptable. As a result, it is tolerated and practiced by a large number of people, and it is used as a beginning point. It’s also mentioned in the lecture about modernity’s present influence.
SEX
- Biological distinction between females and males
- Factors used to determine biological sex :
- Chromosomes : XX for female ; XY for male
- Gonads : Ovaries for female ; testes for male
- Hormones
- Internal sex organs
- External genitals
GENDER
- Gender is more fluid – refers to the social and psychological characteristics associated with being male or female
- It represents learned attitudes and behaviors that characterize people as men or women

SOCIALIZATION
- The process through which we learn attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviors appropriate to the social positions we occupy
- Gender roles : The social norms that dictate what is socially regarded as appropriate female and male behavior.
THEORIES OF GENDER DEVELOPMENT
BIOSOCIAL THEORY (sociobiology)

- Gender is determined by both biological and social factors working in conjunction with each other to produce gender identity.
- The interaction between biological and social factors is important.
- Perceptions of biological sex influence how a child is treated.
SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY

- Reward and punishment
- Modeling
COGNITIVE THEORIES

- Has four stages
- Birth years to adulthood
- Sensorimotor
- Preoperational
- Concrete operational
- Formal operational
EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY

- Gender differences are due to adapting to our environment
GENDER SCHEMA THEORY

- Are building blocks of knowledge we have about each gender
- Can be made up of stereotypes we have about men and women (behaviours ; clothes ; roles
- Become less rigid with experience and knowledge
The fact that various genders play distinct roles in society is an intriguing topic. Man and woman were the only categories available back then, but today there is a considerably wider range of options when it comes to determining one’s gender or sexuality. Keeping with the issue of men and women, we still have gender roles today. Man and woman each play a role in society, resulting in a more balanced society. Engraving that a man can only do this and a woman can’t, and that a woman can only do this and a man can’t, especially for women. Which is true, but is progressively being debunked today as both genders demonstrate that our roles in society do not have to be gendered. In other words, like eating, gender and sexuality have biological components. However, societies have built intricate and ornate edifices around them over time, generating meaning systems that rarely reflect what is natural and innate. Gender and sexuality are mostly experienced via the lens of the culture or cultures to which we have been exposed and reared. Gender identity is significant because many people have one and believe it defines some aspect of their identity. This isn’t only a problem for trans individuals; there are significantly more cis persons with gender identities than there are trans people. For better or worse, how a person shows their gender has a significant impact on how the world interacts with them. Most persons with a gender identity believe that something about this connection is correct or natural, and they are at ease adopting that setting to define themselves and manage their interactions with the world.
We used to live in a very basic and conservative world, but that has changed due to the effect of modernity. From a conservative to a liberated state. The effect of modernity may be seen in the way we dress, act, think, and perceive things, but there are still few individuals or groups who practice conservatism. Everything depends on which community, religion, culture, or family you are a part of. Nowadays, practicing equality and respect is absolutely important since it serves as a bridge for developing positive relationships with others. We can’t deny that everyone is entitled to their own perspective, especially when it comes to the desired gender or prefence that people pick, but we also can’t please everyone. As simple as accepting them for who or what they are is the only thing that we can do,it might sound small or might not matter that much but then to them that would mean a lot.
Lastly, I believe there is nothing wrong with accepting an individual who consciously labels themselves and letting them to be who they are, as long as we do not push it down your throats that we are this or that, and try to force influence others. I don’t even see a problem as long as respect is treated with respect.
Nevertheless, at the end of the day, we are all beings, and that is the most important thing.
